On September 22, 2020, China’s President Xi Jinping surprised the world by announcing a goal to achieve “carbon neutrality before 2060,” and peak carbon emissions “before 2030” at the United Nations General Assembly. 

Meanwhile, with U.S. President Joe Biden’s aims to achieve net neutrality by mid-century in the United States, this marks a unique opportunity to explore enhanced dialogue between the U.S. and China on their respective mid-century climate goals. Still, geopolitical tensions between the two nations remain fraught, and each faces significant obstacles toward rapidly decarbonizing their economies. 

To further explore what barriers and opportunities exist for China’s carbon neutrality goals, this panel heard from the authors of China’s Carbon Neutral Opportunity, with commentary from U.S. and Chinese issue-experts.
